I höst bjuds alla i och utanför Göteborg in att bidra till startandet av ett förlag öppet för alla på Röda Sten. Konstnären Sal Randolphs Free Press kommer att ta emot alla sorters texter från allmänheten. Bidragen kan vara på vilket språk som helst och behöver inte bestå av mer än ett enda ord, men de kan också vara omfattande som ett uppslagsverk. Det kan handla om manifest, deklarationer, dokumenteringar, forskningsresultat, berättelser, recept, dikter eller vadhelst du kan tänka dig.

Alla manuskript kommer att publiceras som tryckta böcker i Free Press-serien och sedan hållas tillgängliga i galleriets läsesal, som också kommer att vara platsen för debatter och andra tilldragelser. Ytterligare några exemplar kommer att smygas in i stadens bokhandlar och bibliotek. "Till och med i internetåldern är bokutgivandet en kringmurad trädgård, med redaktörer och kommersiella intressen som filtrerar bort det mesta av det som skrivs", säger Randolph. "Att ge ut är att offentliggöra, och allt det som ges ut i världen skapar sin egen sorts offentliga platser, blir till en stad av texter där alla läsare och författare är mantalsskrivna. Syftet med Free Press är att öppna portarna till detta offentliga rum. Precis som vilken stad som helst kommer Free Press självklart att innehålla både det fula och det sköna, även om definitionen av respektive begrepp förstås skiljer sig från läsare till läsare."

Free Press bygger på några av Randolphs tidigare projekt, i synnerhet Free Words, då ett världsomspännande nätverk av frivilliga smög in 3 000 exemplar av en ”fri bok” i bokhandels- och bibliotekshyllor, och Free Biennial/Free Manifesta, då hon tog över en konstbiennals form och omvandlade den. Så skapades stora utställningar av fri konst, öppna för alla att delta i, på offentliga platser i New York och Frankfurt. Randolph arbetar med undersökningar av gåvornas och gåvoekonomiernas inverkan när sociala arkitekturer skapas.

This fall the citizens of Gothenburg and beyond will be invited to contribute to the creation of an open-access publishing house at Röda Sten. Artist Sal Randolph´s "Free Press" will accept all kinds of writing from the public; contributions in any language can be as short as a single word or as long as an encyclopedia and can include manifestos, statements, documentations, studies, stories, recipes, poems and whatever you can imagine.

All manuscripts will be published as printed books in the Free Press series, available in the gallery reading room where events and discussions will also take place. Additional copies will be infiltrated into local bookstores and libraries. "Even in the age of the internet, publishing is a walled garden, where editors and commercial interests filter out most of what is written," says Randolph. "To publish is to ´make public,´ and the published materials of the world create their own kind of public space, a city of texts where all readers and writers are citizens. Free Press aims to open up access to that public space. Like any city, Free Press is bound to include both ugliness and beauty, though the definitions of each will certainly be personal to each reader."

Free Press builds on several earlier projects by the artist -- in particular, Free Words, where 3000 copies of a free book were infiltrated onto the shelves of bookstores and libraries by a worldwide network of volunteers, and Free Biennial/Free Manifesta, in which the form of an art biennale was appropriated and re-imagined to create large open-participation exhibitions of free art in the public spaces of New York and Frankfurt am Main, Germany. In her work, Randolph explores the effects of gifts and gift-economies in the creation of social architectures.
