History

Röda Sten Konsthall is run by the non-profit association Röda Sten cultural association. The association, which was founded in the mid 90’s, has approximately 1000 members.

The history of Röda Sten Konsthall and Röda Sten cultural association begins in 1994.
Through the following years the the non-profit organization has realized its vision of making the old boiler house one of the largest exhibition centers for contemporary art and culture on the west coast  through a long series of hard work, exhibitions and events.

Between September 1999 and September 2000 it was time for refurbishment. The reopening took place in October 2000. The rebuild was a low-budget project (of about 5.5 million originally projected to more than 10 million) but made the  boiler house fully operational. In 2001 the first Göteborg International Biennal for Contemporary Art took place.

Today Röda Sten Konsthall is a member of the European network Trans Europe halles and the European biennal network. The organizing of exhibitions and the daily running of the center is carried out by an employed staff suported by members working on voluntary basis.The association acts as trustee for the property, wich is owned by the municipality of Gothenburg wich along with the Swedish art council amd Region västra götaland provide the main economic foundation of the organization.
